ALTI – Shriek

April 18, 20202 min read

• Dark, eerie general feeling
• Slow, hard-hitting drop structure
• Big Room attitude that tries to break clichés

Expanding our own musical borders is something extremely important if we want to keep evolving as a music environment, as a label or just as a simple listener, and that’s what ALTI‌ and Madox Recordings have tried to do with “Shriek”. It’s an unusual release that crosses the worlds of Big Room and Electro House with a dark, eerie formula.

I particularly enjoy when I’m caught by surprise by EDM, and that’s why I’m presenting “Shriek” to you guys!‌ It has a certain unpredictable vibe that left me rather uncomfortable, almost agitated about its upcoming pattern. I felt something I’m not used to feel, and that’s a great milestone, considering that we talk abut a genre I’m knowing for years.

“Shriek” utilizes well-crafted screeches with a brutal lead and a dubstep-influenced background structure, but keeps a general Big Room formula. The creators, Russian duo ALTI, are used to present dark and aggressive concepts in their creations (as we can see on “Opera 2 (Remix)” and “Beautiful‌ Life”), but here we have something really “out of the box”.

I particularly enjoyed how the melody keeps a standard pattern, almost slower than usual Big Room, but, thanks to the supporting elements, the overall effect is unusual and gives me an anxious sensation. Somehow I’m familiar with this kind of melody, but I feel caught by surprise.

Quickly speaking about the breakdown, it uses a well-modulated vocal loop and keeps a minimal schema… A part that didn’t impact in my experience, and, in fact, it was short in duration. There is some work to do there.

“Shriek” can suit well for a Halloween release, considering the effect that gave me, but I recommend it even if it’s just April. It’s a nice little gem that has potential: Big Room is moving towards an even darker directions, and ALTI‌ are perfectioning this concept.
