Martin Garrix – Drown (ft. Clinton Kane) (Nicky Romero Remix)

April 6, 20202 min read

• Conspicuous melody, typical in Nicky’s remixes
• Cut-and-dried structure, feels repetitive
• Drop that drives the track into an emotional spiral

As many of you know, leading Dutch act Martin Garrix releases complementing remix packages of his well-known tracks, say “Dreamer” or “So Far Away”. This is not an exception and as the occasion demands, Nicky Romero’s rework must be there. After a controversial EP previous Friday, which we didn’t prefer so much as to his recent works, we decided to talk about his traditional and signature twist of the latest pop track from Garrix.

First of all, we can see that the remix differentiates the bassline from the original with some fitting vibes, composed of the appreciable rhythm of hi-hats and clapsm presenting an emotional mood. Later, we can hear the bridge between the drop and the initiation of the hook; being a slightly overused part where the only things present are the vocals and the guitar. Unfortunately, the climactic segment is entirely predictable, one can imagine its cadence without hearing it, but as usual in this category of remixes, is grabby. It tries to hit the right sentiments, but misses the mark. Textbook and forgettable drop, deciding on such blueprints was not an intelligent move in our opinion.

It is sad to see that the mentioned style has turned to such monolithic genre, with a lot of standard works and a few great numbers like “Someone” by Vanished or “ID8” by Dimitri Vangelis & Wyman. Nicky tried to mould an emotional remix, but instead it faltered into a failed chance at pleasing the fans, it’s not quite there but could be better. Nice try, nevertheless!
