Holy Goof, Massappeals – Everybodied

April 5, 20202 min read

• Classic vocal sample from “Gonna Make You Sweat”
• Holy Goof’s signature bass house is dominating
• Dynamic and entertaining outcome

Holy Goof is a name that’s buzzing around in the bass scene lately. After a glorious bootleg of “God’s Plan” by Drake that racked up millions of views, the British producer has brought his unique sound on various labels, including UKF and Ultra Records along with heavy support.

Speaking about Massappeals, he’s a long friend of Holy Goof, more trap oriented (I suggest to check out his twerk remix of “Fancy” by Iggy Azalea and Charli XCX).

Combination of two different, yet synergistic trademarks is this peculiar release called “Everybodied“, out now on Musical Freedom, a label that heavily supports talented and unpredictable people. When I see new names in there, in fact, I always expect delightful surprises.

The brutalism of Holy Goof’s bass house is aggravated with a linear build-up that brings up to a blistering and hulking drop, playing around with a funky vocal loop. I recognized the sample, from “Gonna Make You Sweat“: a classic! Hearing it in such a different but effectively constructed context was very interesting.

Anyway, Holy Goof’s sound follows more or less the expected structure, and it’s extremely dominant in his releases. This puts Massappeals’ influence a bit in the background, which is a shame, but I liked the vintage touch with the House-y chords in the breakdown. The drop operates on a simpler wobble-riff, focusing rather on the aggressiveness. Usually, such linearity can be repetitive, and I’m more into complex schematics but in this case, minimalism matched well, building the climax that I was craving in for at the final sequence!

“Everybodied” is a great chance to discover two good and talented acts, whose kinship has led to this striking result. It’s a club-oriented belter whose aim is to set blaze the dance floor, just as one would expect!
