Carl Merlyn – Suffecraft

• Clean and efficient schematic
• Guitar & Violins: excellent choices!
• Superlative sound design, crafted with intelligence and professionalism

The very first 90+ of 2020 has arrived rather unexpectedly! It has been a while since the previous one came from none other than Hardwell, so in short, I’ll explain what happens here. It downright means “goosebumps” material: a song that impressed us to the extent that we decided to give it the colossal rating.

“Suffercraft” is a work of art from Carl Merlyn, a composition that blends together Electro house, old-school Progressive and organic instruments.
The mentioned creator prefers not to be faithful with one particular genre, in this case, giving us a hard time when categorizing. Yes, it’s not an industry-breaking formula, but the unanticipated sound design makes the combination of few, well-chosen elements as a truly unforgettable experience. Add to this a catchy climax created with sublime electric guitar, and you can only imagine my eagerness before the final drop!

Speaking about it, the section was the musical equivalent of a suspenser. Sure, I deeply adore strings in any instrumental, one can’t have enough of them! There are rare cases of “string drops” in the industry (I can nominate “Loud Strings” by Tomsize and “Sirene” from Blinders as examples, both in my all-time favorites)… The drop shares some similarities with Blinders’ masterwork, further scoring essential marks. With this, the captivating melody takes the centre of the stage here. At the same time, the rock influence in the breakdown carries on “Suffercraft” with an impressive personality, giving that idiomatic identity to Merlyn’s craft.

Guitar, strings, a rather aggressive Electro house bassline: with these peculiar but formidably catchy ingredients together, the Swedish composer concocted a splendid output! It’s an example of ace sound design, where every single sound is valorized at its maximum capacity, in a clean yet energetic scheme.

Sweden has always been the heart of Dance music’s hall of fame (Avicii, SHM, DV&W), and there is undoubtedly limitless talent in the Nordic land. Carl Merlyn, with his independent but foolproof production, totally amazed me. “Suffercraft”, if not exceptional, is criminally underrated!
