Maurice West – What The F?!

October 9, 20192 min read

• Elephantine bass
• Old-school vibes transitioning into a more classic drop
• Robotic and repetitive vocal that… Works!

It may be my two cents, but I realized that Maurice West conformed much to his comfort zone this last few months. His tracks were good, yes, and we reviewed most of them, but I wasn’t observing any discerning “out of the box” experimentation being employed in his recent discography.

Apparently, while detaching himself from the heavyweights W&W and their label Rave Culture for once, the Dutch talent has decided to advance his style to a neoteric level.

What The F?!” stoutly clashes and diverges against the earlier, predictable MW vibes. Don’t get me wrong, his Big Room supersaws are here, endearing as always. A robotic vocal fits atypically well with a base that concocts West’s modus operandi with an old-school melodic schematic. There is no dearth of those decade-old vibes, especially in the first drop.

The drops are brutal. Aggressively brutal. In both, the introductory and the climactic ones, there is an internal rage and dark atmosphere that caught me unawares. The two-ton bassline embedded is particularly explosive and raw, probably the heaviest ever used by West… And mind that we are talking about a producer who has always sworn upon aggressive structures!

I like this new Maurice West. It has been a while since I got surprised by his music (which was not deficient in any way, but was following somewhat prosaic arrangements lately), and “What The F?!” literally made me exclaim “WTF?!“. It’s a rather creative and efficacious attempt, mixing entrepreneurship with the MW impression we are used to admire.

This solitary work from Maurice is undeniably brilliant. It would be premature to say this, however, perhaps divagation from his mentors might have sparked ingenuity to help his efforts.
