• Pica is challenging to remix
• The intelligent combination of the old LL and Deorro’s styles
• Solid, engaging drop
Years after Deorro’s crazy remix of “Pogo“, Laidback Luke returned the favour with his edit of “Pica”. Their styles are a perfect fit, in my opinion… But this fact seems to have gone almost unnoticed, and that’s a shame because it’s a remix with a lot of personality!
Laidback Luke made a super risky choice, and I’m sure that part of the fans will prefer the Deorro original (produced with Henry Fong and sung by Elvin Crespo) which honestly is one of the catchiest songs of this summer for me.
However, a veteran like LL couldn’t resist adding his old, Electro House touch, and I’m here filled with appreciation for this genial choice!
Laidback Luke used this combination between Dutch House and Electro House back in the days, and that was the moment when I began appreciating his music. In particular, I suggest checking out his collab with Hardwell, “Dynamo“, or “Turbulence“, with Steve Aoki. In the following years, he naturally evolved his style, but his essence is still here. That’s the sound that brought him to the mainstream arena!
Using it after so much time and mixing it with the unique Deorro bouncy lead is, using chess terms, a perfect checkmate! The two influences fit stunningly, delivering a brutal and energetic banger! The bassline is stable, doing its job efficiently (even though the original bounciness is partially dissipated, sigh) and the listener gets hypnotized by the particular combination of sounds. The melody is old school, but nevertheless refreshing!
I had to struggle with the breakdown, but I must admit that Laidback Luke still managed to deliver a catchy segment. However, I felt that the splendid vocal by Crespo got lost somewhere in there.
In conclusion, Laidback Luke made one of the most exciting remixes I’ve heard recently, mixing his old style with Deorro’s sound. It’s a shame that the original is such a particular song, and it has been heavily edited in this rework, so there have been difficult choices to make… But the result is still a beauty! I highly recommend it, especially if you miss the old LL tracks!
