SWACQ – Ox

July 9, 20192 min read

• Showtek-style lead
• Festival beast, powerful approach
• The melody seems dubious

As the saying goes – “As strong as an ox”. An ox can pull and carry about 1.5 times its body weight across rugged terrain. They are not the most energetic animals in the world, as Revealed declares, but speaking of the new SWACQ banger, I felt it was active throughout and the title is a great choice.

Discovered and brought to light by Tiesto, even though he may have been present in the scene under another alias, SWACQ is one of the most versatile new talents around. He has this acid/aggressive sound, but most of the times he reworks it into various genres, ranging from trap to big room. Multiple releases on Musical Freedom and Revealed got him into both rosters, and, naturally, into our “ones to watch out for” list.

“Ox” introduces the typical SWACQ sound, this time with a subtle Showtek influence in the lead. The drop immediately begins to play with an aggressive and resounding structure. It imparts dynamism and energy, and the melody, despite being a bit repetitive in the following break, hypnotized us. I’m afraid it may become monotonous quickly, but for the first time, it’s an absolute ear-candy.

Side note: the break and buildup were rather simple but enjoyable and unpredictable. SWACQ played around with a slow, escalating reverb approach, creating enough hype for the final section. Brilliant idea.

So, “Ox” is a festival beast, not a masterpiece by SWACQ but an excellent job. It’s melody didn’t entirely convince me, but I think it’s a subjective sensation. If you like the excellent old Showtek, you just have found a perfect successor… This producer continues to impress!
