• Mastodontic drop
• A great combination of trance and big room
• Particular vocal speech
During our previous review of the debut Rave Culture release, we talked about our doubts with regards to its biggest weakness: the lack of artists in the roster. This negative trend still seems to haunt the label because the second release is from the second (out of 2) artist of the ex Mainstage Music. However, it’s still too early to get some conclusions about the W&W rebranded label, and this doubt of us must not influence our review of “The Kick”, the latest creature of the Dutch talent Maurice West, a great big room banger!
A little side note: the cover art is sick! At the moment the biggest improvement is on the design of Rave Culture.
Speaking about “The Kick”, well… The title is pretty significant. The banger presents a monstrous kick – aggressive and ferocious. A deep voice underlines this element with a vocal structure that reminds us of hardstyle… It’s not sung but spoken.
The structure presents similarities to many W&W tunes (especially “Live The Night” with Hardwell), rather than the classic Maurice West sound; we are considering the trancey second breakdown and the drop’s melody in particular. That’s another positive aspect of the release: we were waiting for different approaches! The initial sequence and a couple of fills also sound slightly similar to some of Timmy Trumpets ideas. Maurice West put together various influences with his personal signature approach, resulting in a familiar yet fresh output.
After having said that, let’s sum up our thoughts. “The Kick” is a good festival anthem, having a massive amount of aggressiveness and the right balance between trance and big room elements. Maurice West is undoubtfully W&W’s well-deserved protege, and he did his job in an excellent way. The result is not outstanding for us, but way more than good.
With some doubts about the future of Rave Culture, we enjoyed their second release. The timing between the two songs is great (one month) but we can’t wait to see new names!
